The Alberta Amateur Sports Hall of Fame was founded by the Alberta Branch of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada (A.A.U.C.)

Dissolution of the A.A.U. of C. meant that the Alberta Amateur Sports Hall of Fame would now be administered by Sport Alberta, through its Board of Directors.

Under the stimulus of the forthcoming 75th Anniversary of the Province, program objectives were broadened by Sport Alberta to begin to honour all outstanding Alberta Athletes, amateur or professional, and to begin to collect memorabilia which reflected the whole of Alberta's sporting heritage.

Celebrating Alberta's 75th Anniversary, the newly named “Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum” inducted forty-six athletes and builders, including professional athletes for the first time. ASHFM started collecting artefacts for its permanent collection.

A contest was held and a logo was chosen from over 120 submissions. The design shows the athlete supported by the Alberta Mountains, reaching for the flame of triumph. The two halves of the design symbolize the two aspects of the ASHFM - Hall of Fame and Sport Museum. Informal conversations were first held with the Premier regarding a permanent home for the Hall of Fame. The Program mandate was altered to regulate the number of inductees honoured each year to a maximum of seven.

The 25th Anniversary of the Hall of Fame was celebrated with 300 people in attendance at the Induction Banquet.

First exhibit was created in the Petro Canada Centre in Calgary. The Alpine Building (Calgary) and the Percy Page Centre (Edmonton) also displayed artifacts.

The ASHFM became a Standing Committee of the Alberta Sport Council on February 1, newly formed Alberta Sports.

The Alberta Sport Council announced that Red Deer would become the new and permanent home for the ASHFM once funds were raised to build, equip, and endow it.

An act of legislation resulted in a merge of the Alberta Sport Council with the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. The ASHFM remained as a program of the Foundation. The ASHFM relocated from Calgary to the Red Deer Provincial Building on October 1.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was incorporated as a charitable society February 26, 1997. Governed by a Board of Directors, the Hall of Fame and Museum Society continued to fundraise to build a new and permanent home in Red Deer.

May 22, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum officially broke ground towards building a permanent home in Red Deer.

July, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum moves to its new permanent location by Heritage Ranch in Red Deer.

After a tender process was held, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum officially opened May 26. Founder Willard Brooks, Edmonton Grad Margaret (MacBurney) Vasheresse, and Chairman Orest Korbutt cut the ceremonial ribbon at the QE2 highway location. Almost 1000 people attended the Induction Banquet.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum underwent a large expansion project to add on a new collections facility in the back of the building and create two new galleries Ice & Snow – The Spirit of Winter; and the Hockey Alberta Hall of Fame.

Great Moments of Sport History Theatre underwent renovations to create the "Great Moments in Alberta Sports” Mural on the walls. Thank you to the Edmonton Knights of Columbus Hockey Association for their donations.

Honoured Members Gallery underwent renovations to create a new modernized gallery to honour our Hall of Fame members. Chairman Orest Korbett steps down and the theatre is renamed the "Orest Korbett Theatre: Great Moments in Alberta Sports" The 20th Anniversary Golf Tournament was greeted with sunny skies and enthusiastic golfers at the Innisfail Golf Club.

Launched the Alberta Sports History Library website as a comprehensive resource for the history of sports in Alberta. Created the Resource Library as a place for the public to do research on sports in Alberta.

Updated sponsor wall in the Lobby, including new TV and speakers to greet guests at the start of their visit.

ASHFM celebrates its 60th Anniversary & its 25th Anniversary Golf Tournament. ASHFM collections will undergo major renovations to add a second story mezzanine and new compact rolling shelving within existing space.

ASHFM partnered with the 2019 Canada Winter Games held in Red Deer. We hosted a number of provinical teams and had staff volunteering at various events and locations around the city. 2019 saw the retirement of long standing Managing Director Donna Hateley who had been with the ASHFM for over 20 years. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the preservation of Alberta's rich sports heritage.

ASHFM underwent a new branding process, which resulted in the creation of a new logo , website, and facility upgrades. We installed several new interactives including a green screen Selfie Station and an improvement to our bobsleigh interactive creating the Lyndon Rush Bobsleigh Experience. We installed a new large mural in the lobby featuring many of the recognizable faces of our Honoured Members. We created the new Sutter Fund Party room with the generous support of the Sutter Fund. It is a great space for community gatherings and parties. Another new addition is our 'toddler' area at the back of the museum which is designed to help the littlest of sports fans to begin to explore the world of sports.
